Healthy Apple Snack

Apple Appe, also called appo, paniyaram, or paddu, is a healthy twist to a traditional dish prepared using apples, wheat flour, homemade apple butter, and cardamom powder. These apple bites can be prepared for breakfast or a quick evening snack. To make these apple bites you may need any of the following pan: appe pan, appampatra pan, paniyaram pan, puff pancake pan, aebleskiver pan, paniyarakal pan, takoyaki pan, etc. If you do not have any of the following, you can even make mini pancakes from the same batter. While you are here, check out traditional rice appe, jackfruit paniyaram, banana appe, or even chocolate bites made using the same pan. You can also prepare this for the Ganesh Chaturthi festival along with steamed dumplings ukadiche modak.

Ingredients

Wheat flour, Also called atta in Hindi, forms the base of the batter.Baking soda: makes it fluffy inside.Cardamom powder: for flavor.Apples: Any variety of apples can be used to make this recipe.Apple butter: For an intense, rich apple flavor.Sugar: As a sweetener. Check the recipe card for total measurements of all ingredients.

Step-by-step instructions

Make the batter

Add wheat flour, baking soda, salt, cardamom powder, and sugar in a large bowl and mix these dry ingredients. Add apple butter, and water little by little to form a thick to medium thick batter. I have added approximately 1 cup + ¼ cup of water to make the batter. Finally, add chopped apples and mix.

How to cook appe or apple bites?

Heat a non-stick appe pan. Grease each mold of the pan with butter and pour a tablespoon of batter. Cover with a lid and allow it to cook on a medium flame. When the edges are cooked, flip the appes, add some butter, and cook on the other side for another 2 to 3 minutes or until it turns golden and the edges become a little crisp. Repeat the process for the remaining batter. Serve with honey, homemade ghee, and butter, and enjoy.

Tips

If you do not have apple butter, saute chopped apples in butter with a little sugar till it develops some color and add it to the batter. In this case, you can also increase the amount of chopped apples to ¾ cup. Vary the sweetness as per your taste. I have used a non-stick appe pan. Any leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days in an airtight container. Reheat in the microwave until heated through just before you serve.
