About cream cheese Danish with apples
This is a shortcut recipe with a twist to a traditional version, where instead of flaky puff pastry sheets, individual wonton wrappers or sheets are used. For the filling, I have used sweetened cream cheese to give a nice crunch, coarsely powdered pistachios and almonds, and flavored with vanilla extract. This treat with apples can be served for breakfast, as a day snack with a cup of coffee or tea, or as an after-meal dessert. You can also serve these as a porter for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Game night parties.
Ingredients
Wrappers: I have used wonton wrappers. You can also use puff pastry sheets or spring roll wrappers. Cream cheese: Use softened cream cheese in the recipe. Sugar: Used to sweeten the cream cheese. Nuts: Gives crunch to your pastry. I have used almonds and pistachios. Apples: Any variety of apples of your choice. See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.
Step-by-step instructions
Coarsely powder almonds and pistachios in a food processor. In a bowl, mix cream cheese, sugar, vanilla extract, coarsely powdered nuts, pinch of salt, and mix well. In another bowl, beat the Egg with a pinch of salt and keep it aside. (optional step) Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Evenly spread about ¾ to 1 tablespoon of cream cheese at the center of the wonton wrapper. Now place 2 to 3 apple slices on top of the cream cheese and sprinkle some sugar. Fold 2 opposite corners to meet in the middle of the wrapper and seal them together. Brush with egg wash or heavy cream if desired, and sprinkle some more sugar. (optional step) Transfer to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for about 12 to 15 minutes or until it is light golden brown. Serve and enjoy.
Tips
Instead of thinly sliced apples, you can use berries, seasonal fruit, or even apple pie filling. If you are not a fruit lover, make the classic cream cheese Danish. The only thing that you will have to take care of is the baking time, as every oven is different. Start with 10 minutes at 400F and keep an eye on it as it can easily burn. I have applied egg wash for a nice golden color. If you do not want to use it, you can simply ignore it or brush it with some cream or milk.
