Why We Love This Breakable Chocolate Heart Recipe

Sure, a box of chocolate is a nice gift for your Valentine. But why not take things up a notch this year and give a fun gift that really WOWs them? We have fallen head over heels for this playful edible gift idea… Make a Breakable Chocolate Heart for someone you love and fill it with small gifts like candy, truffles, chocolate-covered strawberries, or even an engagement ring! Then give it as a tasty surprise along with a tiny hammer for smashing, and let the recipient have at it. The best part about this edible chocolate heart recipe is that you can eat the chocolate after you smash it for a sweet treat! Remember hot chocolate bombs? This is a similar idea! You can make one heart mold to place over the top of a gift or treat. Or make two heart molds to fuse together for a solid heart box. Whichever you choose, your recipient is sure to love it this Valentine’s Day! It’s also a super fun and unique way to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays, and more!

Equipment You Need

You’ll also need:

Microwave-safe bowl Piping bag or squirt bottle Disposable gloves for handling chocolate

If gifting these hearts, you will most likely want to purchase cute bakery boxes and a tiny wooden mallet as well as well.

Ingredients You Need

Chocolate – dark, milk or white chocolate (see below) Sprinkles or edible powder – optional, for decorating

For this recipe, you need chocolate melting wafers, also known as couverture chocolate. Couverture is incredibly rich chocolate that has a very high cocoa butter content. It’s a more “pure” ingredient when compared to most chocolate candies, which are made with milk and other additives. Because of the quality it also melts terrifically, has a beautiful shine, and tastes deliciously decadent. You can use your choice of dark, milk, or white couverture chocolate. Or use more than one type and layer by layer create a marbled heart to smash.

How to Make a Breakable Chocolate Heart

Pro Tip: 20 ounces of chocolate will make two large breakable chocolate heart halves. You can give them away separately, covering a gift, or fuse them together to make one larger puffy heart. Pro Tip: Be careful when touching the chocolate heart. Couverture chocolate has a lovely glossy finish. When you touch it, you dull the glossy sheen and leave fingerprints. Wearing clean rubber/plastic gloves helps with this.

Colorful sprinkles in all kinds of fun shapes, glitter sprinkles, nonpareils, and sanding sugar are great to add some flair to the outside of the hearts. Use a piping bag to drizzle a zigzag around the bottom edge of the heart, as we did, and quickly add sprinkles before the chocolate dries. Drizzle chocolate lines over the top of the heart and quickly add sprinkles to create patterns on top of the heart. Use gold or silver edible powder to brush a design over the top of a heart. Use the additional chocolate to create letters and write a message on the top of your heart. Then attach them with melted chocolate.

We lined the bottom of these hearts with edible rose petals and an assortment of truffles. Don’t they look so pretty?! Give your heart away in a pretty box with a small hammer, so your loved one will know what to do!
