What is Chamoyada?
A Mangonada, also known as a Chamoyada or Chamangos, is a fabulous sweet mango treat that is all the rage in Mexico and other Latin American countries. It is essentially a mango smoothie (or slushy) made with frozen mango chunks, lime juice, and fruit juices, that is then served with spicy-sweet Chamoy Sauce and a Tajin seasoning rim around the glass. And we love to serve these for festive events with the traditional tamarind candy straw! Chamoyadas make fabulous treats for kids and adults alike, any time of year. But they are also very easy (and tasty) to make a 21+ drink by adding rum or tequila.
5 Ingredients You Need
Frozen mango chunks – packaged or fresh mango cubed and frozen (no ice cubes required!) Pineapple juice – I recommend juice in the carton versus canned, or mango nectar Lime juice – freshly squeezed Chamoy sauce – store-bought or try our easy Homemade Chamoy Sauce recipe Tajin seasoning – a lightly spiced, tang, bright spice blend
Plus fun garnishes like tamarindo candy straws, fresh mango chunks, and lime slices.
How to Make a Mango Chamoyada
Set out two shallow dishes and two glass tumblers or hurricane glasses. In one dish pour 1 tablespoon of Chamoy sauce. In the other dish pour 1 tablespoon of Tajin seasoning. Dip the rims of the glasses first in Chamoy sauce, followed by the Tajin seasoning. Set the glasses aside. In the blender, combine frozen mango chunks, pineapple juice, and fresh lime juice. Purée until the Mangonada mixture is smooth and thick. If needed, add another splash of juice to loosen it if needed. Once the smoothies are ready, drizzle Chamoy sauce inside the glass, all around the edges. You need about one tablespoon per glass. Then pour (or scoop) the frozen mango mixture into the prepared glass. The chamoy sauce will separate into layers and make designs on the sides of the glass.
Serving Suggestions
Add a sprinkle of Tajin seasoning on top for an extra POP of flavor! Mangonadas have a lot of goodness going on, and are delicious to enjoy as-is. But you can really up the fun with garnishes like a lime wedge and/or chunks of fresh-cut mango. We love to serve these for festive events with the traditional tamarindo candy straws.
