This recipe uses white bread slices dipped in sugar-sweetened egg custard. The granulated sugar results in a delicious caramelized crust on the surface. This easy French toast recipe is a refreshing change from traditional savory breakfast recipes like aloo paratha, plain paratha, dum keema, or nihari.
Why you’ll love this recipe
A great way to use stale bread - Make this easy French toast recipe instead of throwing it away the next time you have stale bread sitting around. An effortless recipe - To call this recipe easy is an understatement. Five ingredients that most people always have on hand and 15 minutes of your time are all you need to assemble it. Beyond breakfast - My family enjoys this recipe as a snack, an impromptu lunch, and even a fun school lunch.
Ingredient notes
Bread - Traditionally, Pakistani French toast is made with plain white bread, and my favorite is Pepperidge Farm’s Farmhouse hearty white bread. Eggs - I use extra large brown eggs for this recipe. Milk - Use full-fat milk to make a rich custard. Sugar - This recipe contains a considerable amount of granulated sugar. This is the ingredient that makes it so good, so don’t skimp on it. Oil - The right amount of oil helps the toast crisp up well on the outside, but too much can make it greasy and soggy. Stick to the quantities provided for the best results.

Substitutions & variations
Use heavy cream - Swap the milk for heavy cream to make this recipe slightly decadent. Add a sprinkle of sugar - I sometimes do this just before frying the soaked bread for a crispier, more caramelized exterior. Add some berries - Serve the French toast with seasonal berries for a pop of color and flavor. Flavor the custard - Add ¼ teaspoon of vanilla, cardamom, cinnamon, or nutmeg. Serve with cream - Whip up some heavy cream and add it as is, or flavor it with a small amount of powdered sugar and your favorite seasoning.
