Why We Love This Funfetti Frosting Recipe
Why is it that sprinkles make us happy? Is it all the color… Or the nostalgic feelings from childhood? No matter the reason, most of us are far more likely to reach for the cookie, doughnut, or cupcake with sprinkles on top, over any other option. I’m not sure who first decided to mix sprinkles into frosting to create the beloved “funfetti” frosting variation, but I’m so glad they did. Homemade Funfetti Frosting is FUN to make, FUN to slather over birthday cake and even more FUN to eat! Not only do you get to have total control over the ingredients, vanilla buttercream frosting from scratch tastes like actual real butter, real cream, and real vanilla… Because that’s what is in it. Use this recipe for frosting all kinds of homemade cakes, cupcakes, or any baked treats that could use a POP of color and delicious vanilla flavor!
Ingredients You Need
Unsalted butter – it’s always better to start with unsalted butter and add your own salt Powdered sugar – AKA confectioner’s sugar Heavy cream – you can use half and half but it won’t have quite the same richness as heavy whipping cream Vanilla extract – use pure, quality extract for the best taste Salt – a pinch to balance the sweetness Rainbow Jimmies AKA Sprinkles – or any color and type you like, but do not use hard crunchy sprinkle-like candies
Recipe Notes and Variations
This particular vanilla frosting recipe is my base for all frosting recipes when I’m not specifically making chocolate frosting or cream cheese frosting. (But honestly, you could turn either of those into a funfetti-style frosting by just adding sprinkles!) My classic frosting recipe a simple decadent blend of butter, cream, sugar, and vanilla. But there are a few ways to tweak things to perfectly customize your version:
There are 2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract in the recipe. If you plan to “mix things up” with lemon, strawberry, peppermint, or coconut extract, consider adding 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1 teaspoon of another extract, instead of omitting the vanilla altogether. You can also adjust the thickness and sweetness of the frosting with the amount of powdered sugar you add. Add a few extra tablespoons of powdered sugar to thicken it up. Too thick? Beat in a splash of heavy cream to get your desired consistency Speaking of, I like to throw a pinch of salt into my frosting to balance out the sweetness… Feel free to add more or less, depending on how sweet you want your homemade frosting to be. Here we are using colorful rainbow sprinkles. But you can use whatever color sprinkles you like to match your theme! Think black and orange for Halloween, green and red for Christmas, or pink or blue for baby showers.
