How to Make Garlic Parmesan Sauce

Set a sauté pan over medium-low heat. Add the butter and flour. Whisk as the butter melts creating a smooth foamy roux. Continue to stir and cook the roux for 3-4 minutes, until it is golden brown. Be careful that it doesn’t get too dark! Add the garlic and simmer for another 2-3 minutes. Once the garlic has softened, stir in the Italian seasoning, onion powder, and chicken broth. Raise the heat to medium and bring to a boil. Once boiling, lower the heat and stir in the heavy cream. Add grated Parmesan cheese. Continue to stir until the cheese has completely melted into the sauce. Taste, then salt and pepper as needed. Either serve warm, or cool and store in jars, in the refrigerator, for up to two weeks.

Recipe Variations

Gluten-Free – Swap all-purpose flour with your favorite GF baking mix alternative. Vegetarian – Use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth. Dairy-Free – I have not tried any alternatives, but in theory, you can substitute the butter and heavy cream with your favorite non-dairy ingredients, such as plant-based vegan butter and cashew cream. If you give it a try, please leave a comment below! Spices – Customize the flavor of this dipping sauce by adding other seasonings like taco seasoning, Cajun or Creole seasoning, or ranch dressing mix. Spicy – Make the sauce spicy by including crushed red pepper flakes or cayenne.
