Why We Love Mac and Cheese Pizza
What child doesn’t love a hot slice of cheese pizza or a bowl of All-American mac & cheese?! Here, we’ve combined the two for a super easy midweek dinner. Mac and Cheese Pizza is a surefire winner with all of the kids and young at heart! Although I normally like to make macaroni and cheese from scratch, as well as homemade pizza, this is a great place to use quick store-bought products to make a dinner no one could possibly complain about! Keep it simple with macaroni and cheese as the main topping, or sprinkle on mini pepperonis or bacon bits as well.
Ingredients You Need
Roll out pizza crust – or homemade pizza dough thawed and rested on the counter Macaroni and cheese – a 7.25 oz. box of your fave mac n’ cheese* Pizza sauce – tomato, or Alfredo for super cheesiness Sharp cheddar cheese – shredded Mozzarella cheese – shredded Italian seasoning – try our easy homemade Italian seasoning blend Toppings – here we have one pizza with just cheese and scallions, and another with scallions and mini pepperonis Salt and pepper – to taste
- Note: Most boxed mac and cheese brands require ¼ cup milk and ¼ cup butter to prepare. Make sure you have these on hand as well!
How to Make Mac and Cheese Pizza
Preheat the oven to 425°F. Move one rack to the lowest position. Set out a large baking sheet. Place a large pot of salted water over high heat and bring it to a boil. Prepare the boxed macaroni according to the package instructions, including the necessary butter and milk. Once prepared, taste, then salt and pepper as needed. Turn off the heat and set aside. Meanwhile, roll the refrigerated pizza dough out on the baking sheet. Spread a very thin layer of pizza sauce over the surface of the crust, leaving a 1-inch rim around all edges. Once the mac and cheese is ready, evenly spoon it over the pizza sauce, gently spreading into an even layer. Sprinkle sharp cheddar and mozzarella cheese over the top of the macaroni. Then sprinkle with Italian seasoning. Now it’s ready to bake in the oven! If using, sprinkle mini pepperonis – or cooked chopped bacon and/or other toppings – over the top of the pizza. Bake the pizza on the lowest rack for 15 to 20 minutes, until the crust is golden around the edges and the cheese is molten. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with chopped scallions, if you like.
Recipe Variations
Make this macaroni and cheese pizza your own by adding any toppings you like! Cooked ground beef, sausage, bacon, and chicken are classic proteins. We also love to add fresh veggies like sliced bell peppers, mushrooms, onion, and olives. This recipe calls for shredded mozzarella and cheddar to compliment the mac n cheese. But feel free to change things up and use your favorite shreddable, meltable cheese. Colby jack, pepper jack, or even 100% mozzarella are good options. Gluten-free? You got it! Use a gluten-free roll-out pizza crust and GF boxed macaroni and cheese. You can make this a dairy-free macaroni pizza! Swap dairy ingredients with your fave melty plant-based “cheese” and vegan boxed mac n cheese. Have a bit more time? Make the pizza dough from scratch!
Serving Suggestions
This Mac and Cheese Pizza has layers of chewy and crisp dough, tomato sauce, cheesy macaroni, and loads of toppings… So it’s basically a meal in each slice! I like to balance the yummy heaviness of this comfort food with a fresh salad. A Caesar salad or simple green salad are both easy to whip up while the ‘za cools.
