What is Mango Lassi?
Mango Lassi is a trendy sweet yogurt-based Indian drink made with mangoes, yogurt, and milk. You can also call it a mango yogurt smoothie. This simple mango smoothie is made without bananas. I have used fresh mango cubes; you can use frozen mangoes, canned mango pulp, or fresh mango puree to make this lassi drink. To make it flavorful, spices like cardamom, cinnamon, a splash of rose water, or a few saffron strands can be used, and you can garnish this drink with nuts, mint, saffron, or fresh mango cubes.

Ingredients
The ingredients used to make traditional mango lassi are very simple. Mangoes: Fresh, frozen, canned mangoes, mango pulp, or fresh mango puree - anything can be used to make this mango smoothie (lassi). Fresh mangoes give you the best result. If using fresh variety, make sure the mangoes are ripe and sweet to reduce the amount of sugar you add to your drink. Also, make sure they are not fibrous. Alphonso is always the best mango variety to be used for this recipe, but it’s expensive too. You can also use Kesar, Neelam, Dasheri, etc. Yogurt: I have used plain whole-milk yogurt (curds/dahi). You can use low-fat yogurt to make it healthy. Greek yogurt will also work but makes your lassi super thick. You will need more milk or water to thin it down. Milk: Whole milk is used to thin down the lassi and to get it to the right consistency. If you want to make it healthier, you can use low-fat or even 2% skim milk. But to make the lassi richer, you can use cream instead of milk. If you want to skip the milk, use water instead. Sugar: This is used to sweeten your lassi. The more sweet your mango is, you can reduce the amount of sugar you add. You can use honey, agave, your favorite sweetener, or even dates to make it sugar-free. But note that the taste and color will change accordingly. If you skip the sugar or other sweeteners, you can turn this drink into a healthy mango smoothie for weight loss. Cardamom and saffron: These are used to flavor the mango lassi. You can use cinnamon or nutmeg too. To get pure mango flavor, you can skip these flavoring ingredients. Pistachios: For garnish. You can use saffron or any nuts of your choice, whipped cream, mango cubes, or even some fresh vanilla ice cream. See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

Tips
Want to taste the traditional mango lassi? For best results, I highly recommend using fresh, sweet, and ripe mangoes. Only if not in season, use frozen mangoes or canned mango pulp. You can even skip the addition of saffron and cardamom powder entirely. Lassi tastes the best when served chilled. Make sure the yogurt, milk, and mango cubes are cold. You may also add ice cubes - but it will thin down the lassi as it melts. When using greek yogurt to prepare lassi, use more milk or water to thin the lassi to desired consistency. If you have all the ingredients, this lassi can be prepared in less than 5 minutes. I highly recommend you make this lassi and serve it fresh for the best taste. If there are any leftovers, keep them in the fridge and consume them within 24 hours. Feel free to skip the garnish, as it is optional. You can garnish the lassi with any roasted and chopped nuts of your choice, mint leaves, whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, etc.
