This is a very spicy and sour dish popular in coastal Karnataka (Mangalore region in India) and traditionally prepared using fish or chicken as main ingredient. Puli means sour and Munchi means chilli in local language. If you love Mangalorean cuisine, then you should definitely try this recipe.

As you all know, I am big fan of mushrooms and like to use it in most of my recipes. I have prepared vegetarian version of Puli Munchi recipe using mushroom and I have served it with Neer dosa (panpolo). Serve it with any dosa variety or hot steamed rice and it tastes great. You can also substitute mushroom with paneer (tofu) if desired. And non vegetarians, substitute with any meat of your choice. To prepare Mushroom Puli Munchi, dry roast red chilies, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds and black peppercorns in medium to low flame till you get nice aroma. Do not do this on high flame as this will burn the spices. Grind the dry roast ingredients along with cashews, garlic cloves, ginger, green chili, tamarind and water to form a smooth paste. Keep this ground paste aside. In another pan, heat oil. Traditionally coconut oil is used. Add onions and saute till it becomes translucent. Add mushroom and saute till its halfway cooked. Add the ground paste, bring it to boil and reduce the heat to simmer. Cover and let this cook for another 7 to 10 minutes and you are done!! If you are spicy food lover then you will love this recipe. But if you like mild version then adjust the spices as per your taste. One more secret is, the gravy actually tastes better the next day, as this gives a chance for all the flavors to get infused. So I generally prepare it in the night so that I can serve it the next day as a side for breakfast (e.g. dosa) or for lunch (e.g. rice, roti etc.) !!
