The best falafel pita sandwich recipe

Falafel Pita Sandwich is classic Middle Eastern food where warm pita bread pockets are smeared with hummus dip, stuffed with hot and crispy falafel along with crunchy tomatoes, sliced onions, cucumbers, dill pickle, and drizzled with nutty tahini sauce. Authentic and traditional Greek sandwich is not a quick recipe. I have made everything from scratch. This is perfect for a weekday lunchbox, dinner, or even for your weekend potlucks, picnics, etc.  Making a pita sandwich is a build-on, make-ahead recipe where you first make the pita bread, then the hummus dip, and finally the falafel. You can cook and freeze falafel and pita bread, refrigerate hummus and tahini sauce, and use them to make sandwiches for up to a week as and when required. If you want a quick version, then try the recipe with store-bought bread, hummus, and falafel. 

How to make tahini at home?

To make tahini at home, toast 1 cup of sesame seeds in a pan on medium-low heat until aromatic and light brown in color. Make sure not to burn sesame seeds while toasting. Continuously stir during the process. Allow it to cool down completely. Transfer toasted sesame seeds to a food processor or high-power blender and process until it turns into a crumbly paste. Now add 2 tablespoon of oil and process for 1 to 2 minutes until smooth and pourable. You must stop in between to scrape down the sides and bottom during the process. Add more oil if needed. Transfer this to a bowl. Add salt to taste and mix. This can be stored in the refrigerator and used for up to a month as and when required.

How to make tahini sauce?

To make the tahini sauce, in a bowl, add tahini paste along with ice-cold water, crushed garlic cloves or garlic powder, lemon or lime juice, and mix until smooth. Adjust the water to the desired consistency. You can also add fresh parsley if desired.

For the sandwich: You will need pita bread or flatbread like naan, hummus dip, crispy falafel balls, and vegetables like tomato, lettuce, parsley, and tahini sauce. For tahini dressing: You need tahini paste, water, lemon juice, garlic or garlic powder and salt.

Step-by-step instructions

Make Tahini Sauce

Add tahini paste, ice-cold water, lemon juice, garlic powder, and salt to taste, and mix until smooth. Adjust the amount of water depending on how thick or thin you like your dressing. If you are using fresh garlic cloves to make the tahini sauce, then either crush them using a mortar pestle or grind or blend them along with the tahini paste in a blender to form a smooth paste.

Making of the best Greek sandwich

Assemble pita bread, falafel, and hummus (homemade or store-bought). Click on each link to get the full recipe. I agree it is time-consuming, but you can divide the recipes, cook them, and then store them in the freezer or refrigerator to use throughout the week. Cut the pita bread into halves. Spread a nice layer of hummus dip on each pita pocket. Add two falafel, each with lettuce, tomato, and parsley. Drizzle each one with tahini sauce. Serve and enjoy.

Variations

You can also add red onions, dill pickles, and cucumber. If you like a hot and spicy sandwich, drizzle some hot sauce like harissa along with tahini. Love naan bread? You can even use naan bread instead of pita to make this sandwich. This sandwich is filling for my family. We like to have it as a complete meal. You can also serve it with some Greek fries or quinoa tabbouleh salad.

Pita falafel bowl

With the same ingredients, you can even make a pita falafel bowl. It’s just the difference in presentation. Instead of cutting pita bread into halves, simply place it in the bowl and spread hummus, followed by lettuce, tomato, parsley, and then chickpeas. Drizzle with tahini sauce and enjoy. You can even serve it with Greek salad and/or rice.
