Mexican and Indian fusion dessert

After creating a fusion with French parfait and Italian tiramisu, it’s time to combine two of my favorite cuisines: Mexican and Indian. If you haven’t checked already, check out our new diwali creations, rabdi gulab jamun parfait and rabri gulab jamun tiramisu. Tres means 3, and leches means milk in Spanish. So the flavors come from soaking the cake and rasgulla in 3 types of milk. Instead of rasgulla tres leches, you can even make rasmalai tres leches cake or gulab jamun tres leches cake. Like other fusion desserts, this tres leches cake with Indian mithai can be made in advance, which is best for Diwali, Christmas, and special occasions. Love fusion desserts? Try these for Diwali, Christmas, or other special occasions like carrot halwa (gajar ka halwa) cake, carrot burfi ice cream, burfi no-bake cheesecake jars, motichoor laddo truffles, and no-bake motichoor ladoo cheesecake. Do let us know which one is your favorite.

Ingredients

Cake: Homemade sponge cake, box mix cake, or store-bought cake of your choice. Any cake will work. I have used gulab jamun rabdi sponge cake. Rasgulla: Homemade soft and spongy rasgulla or store-bought ones. You can even use rasmalai in the recipe. Tres leches milk: whole milk, heavy cream, and condensed milk are used. Check out the recipe card for the full list of the ingredients.

Step-by-step instructions

Use any sponge cake you choose and cut it into the shape of your serving glasses. Then, slice horizontally into approximately 1-inch thick slices. Cut the rasgulla into small pieces.

Making tres leches

Add milk, heavy cream, and condensed milk in a bowl and mix until combined.

Assemble

Add one cake slice to the bottom of the serving glass. Add 2 to 3 tablespoon of the prepared tres leches. Poke some holes using a skewer or fork. Add 2 to 3 tablespoon of chopped rasgullas. Again, add another cake slice and poke holes. Add tres leches and spread a layer of rabdi or rabdi cream. Finally, add one rasgulla on top and garnish it with pistachios and rose petals. Let this chill in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. Overnight is the best.

Tips

I baked a cake with leftover gulab jamun tiramisu. You can also bake sponge cake or use any store-bought sponge cake for this recipe. To ensure the cake absorbs all the milk, poke it all over with a skewer or fork. Instead of serving in jars you can simply spread the cake in 9 * 9 inch baking pan and follow the same recipe. You can add more tres leches milk just before serving if you feel the dessert looks dry. The serving size and the amount of rasgulla, rabdi, and milk you add will vary based on the serving glass jars. Instead of rasgulla, you can even make these tres leches with rasmalai or gulab jamun.
