10-Minute Sugar Snap Peas Recipe

I love snacking on raw sugar snap peas during the day to get a crunchy food fix without busting my calorie bank. However, my favorite way to enjoy sugar snap peas (and snow peas as well) is to quickly stir fry them with sesame oil, garlic, and ginger. Stir Fry Sugar Snap Peas are a fabulous side dish that goes with Asian dishes and many main dish proteins as well. Need to cool things down? This is a fantastic chilled summer salad recipe, too! Refrigerate the sautéed (and cooled) snap peas and serve them as a cold snap pea salad.

Sugar Snap Peas vs Snow Peas: What’s the Difference?

As the name implies sugar snap peas are sweeter, and they also tend to be thicker with more crunchy snap and more flavor overall. Yet while the texture and flavor are slightly different, both kinds of snap peas are scrumptious to make this sesame stir fry recipe!

5-Ingredient Sugar Snap Peas

Fresh sugar snap peas – or snow peas Sesame oil – or other high heat neutral-flavored cooking oil Garlic – minced Ginger – freshly grated Everything bagel seasoning – or just sesame seeds

You will also need a pinch of salt and a dash of pepper to taste.

How to Make Stir Fry Snap Peas

Set a large skillet (or wok) over high heat. Add the sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Stir and sauté for one minute.  Add in the snap peas. Stir and sauté the snap peas for 2 to 4 minutes until they are partially cooked, but still firm. Turn off the heat, and sprinkle with everything bagel seasoning or sesame seeds. Then taste, and salt and pepper as needed. Serve warm, or cool and chill in the refrigerator for a refreshing cold snap pea salad!

Can I make this recipe with frozen snap peas?

Yes, you technically can use frozen snap peas. However, they do not offer the same glorious snap when you bite into them.

Can you substitute snow peas for sugar snap peas in this stir-fry recipe?

Absolutely! They won’t be quite as snap-y, but you’ll still have a delicious side dish.

How long does it take to stir-fry sugar snap peas?

Because you want them to stay firm and crisp they only need about 5 minutes to cook!

What goes with stir-fried snap peas?

Enjoy the peas warm with Asian-inspired mains like orange chicken, sesame chicken, homemade lo mein, pan-fried Korean pork chops, or beef ribs. They’re also terrific as a cold snap pea salad side dish! Serve in the summer with grilled chicken skewers, sesame chicken burgers, and grilled salmon. And we also love to make this kimchi grilled corn on the cob recipe as another side!

How long does this cold salad last?

Store leftovers in an airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. But note that the peas will start to lose their snap after day 2 or so.
