Easy strawberry galette
Strawberry galettes are the best way to enjoy fresh seasonal strawberries. This red dessert is perfect for Valentine’s Day, anniversaries, romantic date nights, etc. The flaky and buttery pie dough is made from scratch. If you are short of time, you can even use store-bought pie dough. With the pie dough, I made one large 10-inch galette. You can also make two medium or five mini individual-sized galettes, like these blueberry galettes.
Things that I love about galette dessert
The best part about galette dessert is that it is very versatile. You can use any seasonal fruit or combination of fruits. Some that go very well are peaches, apples, rhubarb, blueberries, or a mixture of all. During summer, we bake strawberry rhubarb pie at least once a week. You don’t need a pie pan, and there is nothing to worry about the round shape. It is rustic. Serve it for brunch or as an after-meal dessert with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream.
Ingredients
For the flaky buttery dough
Flour: Use regular all-purpose flour. It gives the right texture to your base. Butter: The rich flavor and the flaky texture come from ice-cold butter. Salt and sugar: balance and enhance the flavor. Ice cold water: Using this gives that classic flaky texture.
For the galette filling
Strawberries: use fresh, ripe strawberries sliced. Sugar: regular granulated sugar. Adjust based on the sweetness of the fruit. Cornstarch: Acts as a thickening agent that prevents the galette from becoming too wet. Lemon: Juice and zest brighten the flavor of your dessert. Egg: For egg wash. This helps the crush become golden in color. Check out the recipe card for full list of ingredients and video.
Step-by-step instructions
How long to bake galette?
Bake for 32 to 35 minutes in a preheated 400-degree oven until the crust is golden brown and the fruit is bubbly and cooked. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream, and enjoy. If desired, garnish with mint.
Tips
The amount of sugar can be increased or reduced depending on the sweetness of the fruit. You can combine berries instead of using only strawberries. Like pie dessert, a galette can be served at any temperature - hot, room temperature, or right from the refrigerator. Once you remove it from the oven, make sure it sits for 15 minutes so that the juices thicken before you slice and serve. Baking time may vary depending on the thickness of the crust and oven you are using. So watch your oven a bit earlier than the mentioned time.
Store
Loosely cover the leftover galette in plastic wrap, and you can keep it at room temperature for two days or in the refrigerator for up to 6 days. You can even freeze it for up to one month. Reheat in the oven to 350 degrees until heated through. I do not recommend microwave heating, as the crust will turn soft.
Make ahead
You can make the pastry dough two days in advance, wrap and refrigerate. You can even freeze it for up to one month.
